LIL WAYNE Early Life and Family

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., better known as Lil Wayne, was born on September 27, 1982, in the deprived Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. His mother, a chef, gave birth to him when she was 19. His parents divorced when he was two, and his father permanently left the family. When asked by CBS interviewer Katie Couric why he uses “Wayne” instead of “Dwayne,” Carter explained, “I dropped the ‘D’ because I’m a junior, and my father is living, but he’s not in my life and never has been. So, I don’t want to be Dwayne; I’d rather be Wayne.” When asked if his father knew, he replied, “He knows now.”

Wayne considers his deceased stepfather, Reginald “Rabbit” McDonald, his real father and has a tattoo dedicated to him. He was enrolled in a gifted program at Lafayette Elementary School and later attended Eleanor McMain Secondary School for two years, where he was an honor student and played the Tin Man in the school’s production of The Wiz. After enrolling at Marion Abramson Senior High School, Wayne dropped out at 14 to focus on his music career.

Wayne wrote his first rap song at eight. In 1991, he met rapper and Cash Money Records co-founder Brian “Birdman” Williams, who mentored him and nurtured his love for hip-hop. Wayne recorded freestyle raps on Birdman’s answering machine and was included on Cash Money tracks.

In 1994, at age 12, Wayne suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest that nearly ended his life. Initially reported as accidental, he later revealed it was an attempted suicide after his mother demanded he end his rap-related associations. Wayne credits off-duty police officer Robert “Uncle Bob” Hoobler with saving his life by ensuring he was rushed to the hospital in a police car instead of waiting for an ambulance.

LIL WAYNE Career

Lil Wayne’s career began in 1995 at age 12 when he was signed by Birdman as the youngest member of Cash Money Records. He became the label’s flagship artist for years until parting ways in June 2018. In 1997, at 14, he joined the Hot Boys with rappers Juvenile, B.G., and Turk. Their debut album, Get It How U Live!, and follow-up, Guerrilla Warfare, featured the hit “I Need a Hot Girl.” Wayne also appeared on Juvenile’s single “Back That Azz Up,” which reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart.

At 17, Wayne released his debut solo album, The Block Is Hot (1999), which debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It earned a nomination for Best New Artist at the 1999 Source Awards and included the hit single “The Block Is Hot.” Wayne also featured on “Bling Bling” with B.G., Juvenile, and Big Tymers, appearing in the chorus of the album version.

His second album, Lights Out (2000), was certified gold but didn’t match his debut’s success. Critics noted a lack of coherent narratives in his verses. The lead single, “Get Off the Corner,” was praised for its lyrical style, while “Shine” featured the Hot Boys. Wayne also appeared on “#1 Stunner” with Big Tymers and Juvenile, peaking at #24 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart.

Wayne’s third album, 500 Degreez (2002), followed a similar format with contributions from the Hot Boys and Mannie Fresh. Certified gold, it referenced Juvenile’s 400 Degreez but struggled to replicate his debut’s success. The lead single, “Way of Life,” underperformed, though Wayne featured on 3LW’s “Neva Get Enuf.”

His fourth album, The Carter (2004), marked significant growth in his rapping style and lyrical themes. It sold 807,000 copies in the U.S., with the track “Go DJ” becoming a top-five hit on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The album’s cover introduced Wayne’s now-iconic dreadlocks, cementing his rise as a hip-hop star.

LIL WAYNE Dating Life

Lil Wayne has four children. His first, a daughter, was born on November 29, 1998, to his high school sweetheart, Toya Johnson, when he was 16. They married on Valentine’s Day 2004 and divorced in 2006. In August 2008, rumors falsely claimed Wayne’s daughter died in a car accident, which he refuted, stating, “Please let me refute any rumors or speculations and announce that my daughter is alive, safe, and surrounded by a family that cares and loves her dearly.”

His second child, Dwayne III, was born on October 22, 2008, to radio broadcaster Sarah Vivan. His third, Cameron, was born on September 9, 2009, to actress Lauren London. His fourth, Neal, was born on November 30, 2009, to singer Nivea. Trina was pregnant with Wayne’s child but suffered a miscarriage.

In July 2014, Wayne began dating singer Christina Milian, attending the ESPY Awards together. Their relationship, confirmed in mid-2015, faced criticism from exes Nivea and The-Dream. They broke up by late 2015. Wayne later dated plus-size model La’Tecia Thomas, announcing their engagement in May 2020. In June 2020, he began dating another plus-size model, Denise Bidot. They reportedly split in November 2020 over Wayne’s endorsement of Donald Trump but later reconciled.
